Description
A variation of the Zen Buddhist parable about the tiger and the strawberry. As the story goes, once, a man traveling in the mountains was set upon by a tiger. He fled, the tiger after him. Coming to a cliff with nowhere else to go, he grabbed the root of a wild vine and jumped, swinging himself down over the edge. But he just hung there, barely out of reach of the tiger’s swiping claws. The tiger sniffed at him from above. Trembling, the man looked down to see crocodiles watching him, far below, waiting for him to fall. Only the vine sustained him. Then a mouse appeared out of a hole in the cliff face and started to gnaw away at the vine. As the vine began to stretch thinner and thinner, he knew he was doomed.
Then, the man saw a wild strawberry growing from the vine. Smiling, he plucked and ate it. How sweet it tasted!
This is an old Zen parable about simply enjoying the beauty of the present moment, with no attachment for the past—the tiger—or fear of the future—the inevitable crocodiles lying in wait—and being truly alive for every second of your life.
This, however, is of a young woman standing in a wild strawberry patch and thinking of that parable when she notices she is being stalked by a leopard, and decides she isn't going out like that. She'll fight to the death and eat all the strawberries afterward.
