Description
This large, intelligent cephalopod is adapted to cold, oxygen-rich pacific waters at depths ranging from the intertidal zone to 2000m. It hunts crabs, bivalves, fish and snails with its suckers, eating them with its chitinous beak. It can compress its entire body to creep through openings just slightly larger than its beak, the only hard part of its body. It can briefly reach speeds of up to 40km/hr using jet propulsion of water through its siphon. Females attach egg strings to the roof of their den and guard them carefully.
