Description
In the midst of blazing leaves, a young woman contemplates her future.
“Autumn,” we pronounce, “is a time of everything ending, because the leaves are dying and getting ready to fall, because winter is coming.”
Well, this is one way to look at it – a bleak way – but another way to view the color and blazing emotion of autumn is that it is just that: oranges and reds and yellows and golds and rusts and burgundies, colors that we rarely see in the midst of summer, but are surrounded by in the season of fall.
In many ways, these colors are those of sunset on the coast, and as we all know, sunset on the coast is not the end of all things because the next step is the darkness of night. As sure as there is darkness – usually not total darkness, incidentally, since the moon and their stars provide light of a different kind – there is light the next day as the dawn approaches.
So it is with autumn, with its blaze of color signifying the time of harvest and gathering. Yes, winter will follow, but so also will spring after winter, and summer after that. It is a reminder, one perhaps that the young woman is contemplating at the beginning of her mortal life, that there is a time and season for everything, and though we may wish to stop in one season, or jump ahead to another, these are not decisions within our control.
What we can do, and what we come to realize as we take time to contemplate, is that every season has its own beauty, and its own challenges, and it behooves us to recognize, accept, work with, and understand this situation. In doing so, we marvel at the beauty of each season, and rest in knowing that it has its place and time, as do we.
